My eight-year old decided that she was over Barbie and she wanted to help plan her own birthday party. I took her to look at the birthday party supplies a week before her birthday. We walked into the store and she announced that she was looking for the “grown up” party decorations. Wow! The looks I received from almost every single parent in that store. I am pretty sure my face turned four different shades of red as I tried to explain that “grown up” meant anything that wasn’t Barbie or Care bears. I gave up; grabbing my daughter’s hand I sprinted out the door.
We decided that it would be much easier for her to find what she wanted on the internet. As she looked for party decorations, I tried to think of a way to explain to her why she shouldn’t call them “grown up” party decorations. I made a very lame attempt and told my eight-year old that it would make the younger children think that they looked like babies. Next year we are going to the pizza place!
