If you're the parent of teenagers or those pesky pre-teens known as tweens, you know how hard it can be to keep them entertained and happy, especially on special occasions like birthdays. It can excruciating coming up with birthday ideas that they'll like, and believe you me, they're not shy about voicing their disapproval when they don't like something or think it's just another lame idea from good old mom and dad. However, if you're smart and really want to be tuned in to what would please your tween children, it's a good idea to talk to their friends about what your own kids are into these days. That sounds counterintuitive, I know, but stay with me; there's method to my madness. My reason for going to my child's friends for birthday themes is because most kids will tell their friends' parents things that they wouldn't share with their own parents. So, if your tween is at that sullen, stand-offish stage, talk to the child's friends in an easy, relaxed way and see what you can learn that way. You'll be surprised at how much some kids will open up to an adult when they feel like their opinion is being respected. A good place to start looking is an amazing website I found called Shop On Mine, located at: http://www.shoponmine.com. As you may already suspect, your tween is probably into the same characters and ideas as other America tweens across the country. So if you've been wracking your brains trying to think up birthday themes and party decorations that won't be dismissed out of hand by your tweens, then think about what's popular with kids right now. What are they into? Well, the Harry Potter books are still popular. Stephanie Meyer's Twilight series is selling like hotcakes, the last Batman movie was huge with teens, tweens, and pretty much everyone else who went to the movies. Iron Man got a new lease on life with the excellent movie starring Robert Downey, so you're probably in good shape if you choose some character your child likes as the basis for your birthday ideas. If your child likes Batman, say, you should definitely visit the Shop On Mine site for their incredible assortment of Batman birthday party supplies. The very cool Batman Activity Place Mats are a great deal when you buy them in an 8-pack, but that's only one of the many, many Batman birthday party supplies this site stocks. You can get plates, cups, banners, tablecloths, centerpieces, even candle holders, all with a Batman theme for that hard-to-please tween. Who knows, you might even get your kid to stop being sullen for an entire afternoon! |
